Question: I am planning my daughter's wedding and would like to know what I should make the grooms family pay for, as I am paying the wedding. As it was in the good old days?

Answer: The groom and his family's traditional expenses are bit less of a burden than yours but still quite hefty. As you can imagine the list has blurred over time but most sources will agree on the following:

  • Marriage license and officiant's fee (plus accommodation and transportation if applicable)

  • Groom's outfit

  • Bride's bouquet, female attendant's bouquet, and going-away corsages for both couple's parents and grandparents

  • Boutonnieres for men, (and corsages for mothers and grandmothers if applicable)

  • Wedding night and honeymoon (all of it!)

  • Rehearsal dinner (if applicable)

  • Music at the wedding (or DJ or band)

  • Alcohol at the wedding

  • Bride's engagement ring and wedding rings

  • Groom's gift to bride

  • Groom's gift to best man and groomsmen

  • Groomsmen attire and lodging (if applicable)

  • Groom's family and groomsmen transportation and lodging (if applicable)
